Convicted sex offender arrested

Timmins, Ontario, November 28, 2008 — The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) announced today that together with the Timmins Police Service, it arrested Billy Ray Ross Jr., a convicted sex offender in the United States. The arrest took place on November 26, 2008.

Mr. Ross was convicted of indecency with a child and failed to register as a sex offender in Texas in July 2008. The arrest was the result of close cooperation with the Timmins Police Service and demonstrates the CBSA's ongoing commitment to collaborate with its law enforcement partners to protect Canadian families and communities. Those who commit serious crimes are not welcome in Canada.

Mr. Ross will appear before the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada. As required under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, the Board will review the grounds for his detention within the next 48 hours.
