Departments at the Bank

Data and Statistics Office

Role

The Data and Statistics Office (DSO) manages the information used to support analysis within the monetary policy and financial system departments. Data management staff liaises with data sources and clients, evaluate data quality, generate multiple reports and packages and disseminate data in a wide variety of formats both internally and externally. The DSO is the content owner for a variety of pages, packages and information available on the Bank's external website and is responsible for creating the money and credit aggregates as well as the Banks`s Commodity Price Index. The DSO supports an information governance framework jointly with the monetary policy and financial system departments.

Organization

Our ongoing activities include:

  • The acquisition, verification, manipulation and appropriate storage of data from a wide variety of sources, both internal and external to the Bank of Canada.
  • The creation and management of the money and credit aggregates and the Bank's commodity price index.
  • Administration (jointly with the Investment Industry Regulatory Organization of Canada (IIROC) of the Market Trading Report System (MTRS) used for tracking fixed income secondary trading.
  • Administration jointly with the Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions Canada (OSFI) and the Canadian Deposit Insurance Corporation (CDIC) of the Tri-Agency Database System (TDS) used for collecting data from federally regulated deposit-taking institutions.
  • Management of a number of data surveys from the Canadian Foreign Exchange Committee (CFEC) and the Bank for International Settlements (BIS).
  • The creation and maintenance of analytic reports, tables and graphs and the distribution of required information to external destinations such as the Bank for International Settlements, International Monetary Fund's and Statistics Canada's key socioeconomic database. This includes publication of critical market data to the Bank's external website.
  • The DSO is the content owner for a variety of pages, packages and information available on the Bank's external website including the Weekly Financial Statistics (WFS), Banking Financial Statistics (BFS), CORRA, Exchange Rates (noon and closing), FAD, the Canadian-dollar Effective Exchange Rate Index (CERI) and Special operations (SRA, SPRA).
  • Relationship management with data sources and clients.
  • Support of the information governance framework jointly with the monetary policy and financial system departments.
  • Provision of training to internal clients on the data and statistics and related tools.
  • Monitoring and studying of emerging issues, best practices and developments in the statistics, financial market and the target data community; identifying opportunities for changes; and conducting projects concerned with improving the quality of the data, introducing new processes and statistical methodologies, acquiring new tools and developing and refining statistical analysis and data management standards.
