The TSE 300 Composite Index, which is widely considered as the benchmark for Canadian equities, was renamed the S&P/TSX Composite Index effective Wednesday, 1 May 2002. The index level after 1 May is completely comparable to its historical data as its constituents and the index calculation method are exactly the same as before.
