David Laird
(March 12, 1833 - January 12, 1914)
David Laird was the Liberal leader of the Prince Edward Island Legislative Assembly until he was elected to federal Parliament in 1873. There, he was minister of the interior from 1873 to 1876.
In 1876, he would become the first lieutenant governor of the Northwest Territories, a position he held until 1881. He negotiated Treaties seven and eight with the First Nations, and was named commissioner of Indian Affairs for the West in 1898. Laird acted as advisor to the Department of Indian Affairs in Ottawa from 1909 to 1914.
