Aboriginal People and the RCMP

The RCMP has maintained a rich and evolving relationship with Canada’s Aboriginal people over the course of its history. Today the RCMP proudly serves 634 Aboriginal communities across Canada and lists “Serving Canada’s Aboriginal People” as one of its 5 strategic priorities. In all, 67% of RCMP detachments serve Aboriginal communities.

As a long-standing law enforcement partner of Aboriginal communities, the RCMP continues to influence public policy, provide policing services in hundreds of communities across Canada, and works closely with Aboriginal groups to develop innovative policing approaches that meet their distinctive needs.

The RCMP is committed to a membership which is representative of Canadian society and to promoting and supporting equity within its employment practices. Each year the RCMP offers Canadian Aboriginal people from the ages of 19 - 29, the opportunity to get an inside look at daily police work of the RCMP through a program called the “Aboriginal Pre-Cadet Training Program” (APTP).
