This page contains a list of hobby interests or specialties in the earth sciences. All clubs have been grouped according to these specialties. For example, look under mineralogy to see a list of clubs that focus on minerals and mineral collecting. For convenience, specialties have been organized into larger categories: beginners, advanced, artistic focus, and museum societies.
Beginners / General Interest:
- General Clubs with a broad interest in rocks, minerals, gems, lapidary, fossils, and the earth sciences in general. Most clubs in Canada fall into this category. Recommended for families, children and individuals with little or no knowledge in the earth sciences, or who are just starting a hobby.
Advanced:
- Mineralogy Clubs specializing in the study, collection and preservation of mineral specimens. Recommended for professional and avocational mineral collectors. Not recommended for those with a casual interest in minerals.
- Gemmology Clubs that focus on the collection and formal study of gemstones.
- Paleontology Clubs specializing in the study, preservation and responsible collection of fossils. Recommended for those with an interest in fossils.
- Geology Clubs that focus on topics related to the geological sciences. Recommended for those with formal training in Geology.
Artistic Focus:
- Faceting Clubs that specialize in the art of gem cutting. Recommended for those with experience in this field.
- Lapidary Clubs that focus on cutting and polishing stones, stone carving, wire wrapping, and jewellery making.
Museum Societies:
- Museum Societies These clubs support a local mineralogy or paleontology museum. Ideal for families and advanced collectors.
