| Marie Thorpe has a BA degree with English and Philosophy majors, and an Honors degree in Philosophy from the University of Natal, South Africa. She is the author of two children's books - Lucy's Games (Tafelberg, 1992) and Limboland (Via Afrika, 1996) - as well as countless short stories and articles. She is the recipient of the prestigious Quill Award (1993). Lucy's Games was reviewed on national radio and on ZAP, a children’s television program, and listed in the 1992 books of the year by Bookchat, a magazine and reference for reviews of children’s books. Lucy's Games won the Bronze Medal in the 1992 Sanlam Prize for Youth Literature. Marie is also the co-author of a book on short story writing entitled Write From the Beginning published by The Writing School in 1990, which stayed on the local bestseller list for several weeks. She has been a librarian, as well as a tutor and lecturer in the Philosophy Department at the University of Natal. During her writing career, she worked as a reporter and columnist, and had numerous short stories and articles published in magazines: Femina, Fair Lady, Personality, Woman’s Value (South Africa); Woman’s Realm (UK); Woman’s Weekly (Australia). A number of her short stories have been broadcast by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). Currently, Marie is a tutor for the Writing School and the Language School, both branches of The Leisure Study Group which has employed her for the past thirteen years. She is involved in the Wordwise Reading Project, which entails writing reading cards for young readers, a project organized by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). Aside from her writing interests, Marie runs a school for street children, which presently occupies most of her time. Highly respected in the SA writing and publishing world, Marie Thorpe is an honorary life member of the South African Writers' Circle and one of their official competition judges.
