About Deborah and Joel Shlian, a husband and wife MD writing team, co-authors of SHOU, the secret of longevity. E-mail: dshlian@earthlink.net Read our review of SHOU Read the interview Deborah and Joel Shlian are both physicians who practiced and taught Family Medicine together for over ten years before returning to UCLA for MBAs. They have since balanced medical management consulting with writing. They often write together, producing several medical mysteries as well as non-fiction books and numerous magazine and journal articles on healthcare and medical management issues. They recently moved from Los Angeles to Boca Raton, Florida. The Drs. Shlian are an unusual couple. Together they combine their clinical experiences with their other accomplishments. They have traveled to over 50 countries and have witnessed healthcare first-hand throughout the world. They have practiced medicine in the Army (Deborah was one of only a few women physicians in the Reserves during Vietnam) as well as at a major HMO and at a world class academic medical center. When they saw the altruistic foundation on which "managed care" was originally conceived being eroded, they returned to school to study business. They graduated from UCLA's Anderson School of Management and began a healthcare consulting firm. Seven years later, Shlian & Associates is a thriving national business. Each of their novels tackles a medically related issue. In Wednesday's Child it is the still-timely problem of child abuse - how even well-meaning, well-educated parents can miss important clues. In the course of writing the book, the Shlians researched the child abuse situation thoroughly and developed important advice for parents. In Double Illusion, they fictionalized a true event: the kidnapping of babies from hospital nurseries. Again, they researched the issue and learned that far from being sanctuaries from outside perils, hospitals often have poor security controls and procedures. After almost a decade away from fiction writing, the Shlians have written a new novel. With SHOU, their most ambitious novel, they tackle the issue of big business and medicine as well as the "what if" mankind had access to the secret of longevity. The Shlians unusual activities have been reported in feature stories by nationally circulated magazines and newspapers. This unique couple has appeared on nationally syndicated television and radio talk shows. Both have strong and sometimes controversial opinions on the direction American medicine is headed.
