Cole Wescott is running for his life. If he hopes to have a future, he’ll have to return to the past. Laurel Hastings has spent the last fifteen years trying to forget the past. When she realizes the wounded man she’s discovered lurking on the deserted property across the lake from her cabin is Cole, it all flies back up in her face.

Once upon a time, they’d promised to marry one another. Then, without a word, Cole vanished, leaving her with a broken heart and a secret she swore she’d never reveal. Cole’s unexpected presence is disruptive to her isolated existence as a caretaker of wounded wild animals. But old commitments are still hard to break and he’s in trouble. Here, at the old homestead, his brother Mike buried evidence that will convict a felon and prove Cole’s innocence. Now Cole’s life is in danger if he can’t find the clues that Mike died trying to protect.

Spirit Lake is a tale of broken promises, tragic losses and the hope for new beginnings. It’s a complex plot in which the search for answers is a parallel that includes both fact and emotion. The character of Laurel Hastings is complex but sometimes scarcely drawn. Occasionally, the resolution reached seems a little too abrupt, but still within the realm of credibility. Spirit Lake is more cerebral than action focused, but provides a satisfying escape to another place and time.
