It covers all the variations, from genteel cozy - such as the subtle English Autumn - Summer Fall by Minette Walters - to horror. Lee Childs' James Penney's New Identity is the unassuming monster that creeps up from under your bed, says a cheery "Hello" and then snatches you by your ankle. Maxim Jakubowski's The Day I Killed Tony Blair is so laugh-out-loud funny you can't decide whether to feel guilty. (No offense, Mr. Blair; it really has nothing to do with you or your office.) Frankie and Johnny Were Lovers? by Paul Charles is wickedly sly and truly, delightfully surprising. On the Other End of the Slide, Lucky Bastard by Martyn Waites is a sad portrait of a desperate actor at the end of his rope. You squirm as you read: "You know what's going to happen but you keep reading anyway - rather like waiting for two trains to hit." Helena and the Babies by Denise Mina makes you firmly hope you never have to put a loved one in a nursing home. Crime Fest by Paul Johnston is a sweet piece of irony, a classic. |
