Roxanne Prescott, former police officer turned guide for her aunt’s tour company, wants a nice quiet trip, away from police work, away from stress, away from the tragedy that made her leave the Austin Police Department in the first place. Unfortunately, fate decides otherwise, beginning with Roxanne’s aunt coming down with chicken pox, and a series of minor "accidents" that seem to plague the History & Gardens Tour trip. Guests slip and fall, leeches get left in a guest’s room, and overall, this trip is a nightmare for the former cop. It’s not until things begin to get deadly that Roxanne Prescott slaps on her cop hat and begins to investigate seriously.

With a deft touch and excellent writing, Taffy Cannon definitely establishes the who, what, where and how of Guns and Roses. Roxanne Prescott is a complex heroine with a haunted past that is not only likeable, but believable as well. Cannon’s descriptive narrative of restored Colonial Williamsburg, and her amusing, light, yet insightful characterizations of the tour participants show her expertise in establishing the setting for an excellent cozy with a darker side.

Fans of Cannon’s Nan Robinson mysteries will not only enjoy this first book in a planned series featuring Roxanne Prescott and the Irish Eyes Travel Agency, but will clamor for more.
