Murder Among Strangers by Jonnie Jacobs Kensington Press 384 pages, 2000 ISBN 1575665409 Reviewed by Andrea Collare A question tinged in fear, asked by a six-year old girl, "Is it them again?" pulls us into Kate Austens world of terror. After pulling over on a rainy night to help a stranded motorist, Kate stumbles into an accidental murder and becomes an impromptu kidnapping victim. Left with no choice, her young lovelorn captors feel forced to offer Kate the same demise as the cold body in their trunk rather than risk revelation of their secret. As her detective boyfriend, Michael, frantically attempts to follow her few desperate clues, Kate begins to form a bond with her female captor, Sheryl Ann. Details of the accidental killing of Sheryl Anns husband surface. Kate begins to feel a maternal responsibility for the troubled young woman who will eventually save her life. After a life threatening escape from her kidnappers, Kate's relief is short-lived. Within hours of her discovery, she becomes the prime suspect in one of her captor's deaths. As she and Michael attempt to clear her name, they are plunged steadily deeper into the lives and conspiracies that revolved around Sheryl Ann. Their search for the true killer escalates into a second kidnapping and the betrayal of anothers trust. In this well organized addition to the Kate Austen series, Jonnie Jacobs skillfully alternates from the first person point of view of Kate to the third person point of view of her lover, Michael. Jacobs has created interesting details of each character's life that neatly tie together in the finale. Murder Among Strangers is an entertaining and appropriately suspenseful read. I look forward to the next chapter in Kate Austens life. |
