Spirit of the Straight Edge by Barbara J. Lakey Dark Star Publications, 2000 ISBN 158697159X Order from publisher http://www.darkstarpublications.com Reviewed by PJ Nunn El Sanders finally has her life back on track after a bad marriage and a worse childhood. She returns home one day to find her roommate and best friend dead and mutilated in her own bed, and something snaps inside her. Maybe the police have given up on finding Lynns killer, but El hasnt. Everywhere she looks, she sees victims of brutal and senseless crimes. Women whove been ravaged some by strangers, others by those they once loved. Is justice really so elusive? Is every male-female relationship like strolling through a minefield? Slowly and methodically, El formulates a plan. Maybe she cant save everyone, but she can sure track down the man who took her only friends life and make him pay. With determination born of years of anguish, El decides to do just that, even if she has to die trying. SPIRIT OF THE STRAIGHT EDGE is harsh and uncompromising. Lakey does an excellent job of depicting developmental details in Els life that explain her motivations and her conclusions. The book is graphic and explicit, both in violence and sexual content. More than anything else, it is a fascinating look at variances in perceptions of normalcy. Lakey has tremendous psychological insight into events that shape an individuals reasoning process. This is not a tale for the squeamish. Readers will be checking window locks before bedtime, savoring a trip to the darker side of life and smiling at a very satisfying conclusion. An exceptional book for those who enjoy a more hardboiled approach. |
