The Lord of Necrond by Jane Welch Earthlight 511 pages, 2000 ISBN 0671773461 Reviewed by our UK Editor Rachel A. Hyde At the end of the previous book in this series of the Book of Ond trilogy, the characters of Brid the Maiden Priestess, young lordling Caspar and the worldly, charming Hal have been cast to the four corners of Welchs fantasy world. They all have some growing up to do, and with adventures like these, it is certain that this at least will be accomplished. So much happens in these packed pages that they hardly have time to pause for breath fearsome monsters loosed from a magic egg, torture chambers in an other wordly location, strange beings living in the woods, treks across deserts both sandy and icy, and much more. I had thought when reading the authors earlier books that they were standard fantasy fare nice view but Ive seen this scenery before but by the sheer vigor of the narrative in this book, I have definitely changed my mind. Most fantasy writers produce a long book but this one actually contains a long story as well. I look forward to the next novel and I think that, like the characters in this tale, the authors writing skill has come of age. |
