The Modern Writers Handbook (5th ed.) by Frank OHare and Robert Funk Allyn & Bacon 655 pages, 2000 ISBN 0205299008 Reviewed by PJ Nunn THE MODERN WRITERS HANDBOOK is a comprehensive text, divided into nine parts. Part one covers planning, producing, revising, proofreading, and editing. Part two addresses critical reading and writing arguments. Parts three through seven cover specific principles of grammar, sentence structure, punctuation, and spelling. Part eight focuses on research papers, and part nine discusses different styles of writing. A self help section allows users to test themselves on grammar, punctuation, mechanics, syntax, and diction. The answer key links the user to appropriate sections of the handbook for further study. Another useful feature is the insertion of tips for working with a computer. Consider the following for revising on a word processor: "Check your sentence length and variety by hitting the return key after each sentence. (You should work with a copy of your main file when doing this procedure.) Each sentence will now look like a separate paragraph. Examine them closely. Do they all appear to be the same length? Do they all begin the same way? Are they all in the same pattern?" p. 38. Scattered throughout the book, hints like this offer time-saving methods for applying the principles established in the text. Essentially a textbook designed for a college grammar and composition course, THE MODERN WRITERS HANDBOOK may be too extensive to use as a desk reference. It is, however, a useful tool, especially for writers who have not had a formal college education. While the book is small, the text is easy to read and the layout is organized visually for rapid reference. Freelance writers who write for a variety of publications will particularly appreciate the sample articles and citations that illustrate MLA and APA styles. Rules of grammar have evolved somewhat over the last few decades and professional writers need to stay abreast of those changes. THE MODERN WRITERS HANDBOOK is an invaluable tool to have on hand. |
