Dead Man Falls by Paula Boyd Diomo Books 268 pages ISBN 0967478618 Reviewed by Phillip Tomasso III Read our review of the first book in this series: Hot Enough to Kill Paula Boyd created a winner when she introduced amateur sleuth Jolene Jackson in Hot Enough to Kill. The second book in the series Dead Man Falls lets the reader set out on a raging river of intrigue and suspense. Jolene heads back home to her small hometown in Texas to celebrate her mothers birthday. Though she is not thrilled to return, she is even less thrilled when her mother drags her along to the opening ceremony of a man-made waterfall. When the ceremony begins, it is more than water that falls over the rocks, theres a body going over, too. The police find the body in the river holding a plastic bag with several pictures of students torn out of an old high school yearbook. One of the photographs is of Jolene, the other is of the dead man holding the pictures. Only the dead mans picture has an X through it. Soon, more and more bodies turn up murdered, as the killer works his way through the people on those yearbook pages. Jolene knows she must find the killer before the killer finds her. Dead Man Falls is a true mystery. Boyd provides many puzzle pieces, with some that fit and others that don't. Only the correct pieces will complete the picture and point to the murderer. Aside from the clever plot, I was entertained by Boyds wonderfully amusing writing style and characterization. The story and Jolene Jackson had me laughing out loud. I related to the semantics of family, dating and inner turmoil. Paula Boyd has found a new fan in me, and I cannot wait to see what kind of mischief Jolene Jackson will be caught up in next time. |
