Things seem to be a little muddied in Clearview, Texas. While one of the town’s leading citizens is lying dead in someone else’s grave, the dead seem to be walking about rather energetically. According to the prisoners in the Blacklin County Jail, a ghost has taken up residence. Sheriff Dan Rhodes doesn’t believe in spirits, but neither can he explain some of the things that are going on in Clearview.

The dead man, Ty Berry, had been trying to catch thieves who’ve been looting local cemeteries. It appears however that they found him first. As Dan starts digging a little deeper into the lives of the townspeople, he realizes that there is more buried beneath the surface than he ever imagined.

A Ghost of a Chance is rich in well-rounded and humorous characters. Sheriff Rhodes is an engaging and interesting protagonist, and the perfect foil for his down-home staff Hack and Lawton. Their Laurel and Hardy exchanges are highly amusing, and Dan’s reaction to them is even funnier.

This novel is a fun ride with a tight, well-paced plot. I found this to be a true mystery, with a trail of clues left for the reader to follow and enjoy. This is the tenth installment in the Dan Rhodes saga. Although it stands alone, it is a welcome addition to a terrific series. Dan is a great character who leaves the reader hoping that there will be many more stories about the Sheriff of Blacklin County.
