Hair Raiser propels us back into the intriguing world of Marla Shore, owner of the Cut ‘N Dye beauty shop.

In the second novel of a series entitled The Bad Hair Day Mysteries, Marla volunteers to help Ocean Guard, an environmental organization, host a fund-raiser. Marla's job? To gather together some of Fort Lauderdale’s most popular chefs for an event called The Taste of the World. Sound simple? Not really. Someone is trying to prevent the chefs from participating.

After a series of strange mishaps, Marla sets out to discover who is behind an obvious attempt at sabotage. But before she can solve one problem, another pops up. Hazardous waste has been dumped on the beach of an important mangrove preserve that Ocean Guard oversees, putting its ownership in jeopardy. If the property is not immaculately maintained, it will revert to the heir of the original owner, and out of Ocean Guard’s control. Who is the heir? And how far will he or she go to gain the preserve? The answer becomes clearer and much more deadly when the lawyer supervising the property is found murdered.

Marla looks at the board of directors of Ocean Guard as possible suspects. The problem is, everyone seems to have a motive. Whose secret cost lawyer Benjamin Kline his life? As all the skeletons are unwillingly pushed out from their closets, each board member appears capable of being the guilty party. Marla’s not sure who she can trust. David Newburg, the handsome accountant in charge of Ocean Guard’s finances, throws a confusing but romantic piece into this already baffling puzzle. Marla is definitely attracted to him. But hunky police detective Dalton Vail, introduced in Permed to Death, the first novel in this series, is still hanging around. And still causing Marla major butterflies.

Hair Raiser is suspenseful and engrossing. Cohen has richly filled this novel with quirky characters, with twists and turns that make for a completely satisfying reading experience. The plot will keep you guessing, and Ms. Cohen’s writing style will keep you coming back for more.
