Maquette for Murder by Gretchen Sprague St. Martins Minotaur 230 pages, 2000 ISBN 0312199201 Reviewed by Nancy Mehl Martha Patterson is a retired New York attorney who admits to one particular fault nosiness. The death of a young artist, and the beating of Hannah Gold, a sculptor and friend of Marthas, bring out her inquisitive nature. Was the attack personal, or was it an act committed during an attempt to ruin Hannahs entry into a national art competition? It seems that the person who murdered Kent Reed and bashed Hannah on the head also took time to destroy Hannahs maquette, a small replica of an intended larger work. The clues all point to a disgruntled artist, but Martha feels that the picture that has been painted of the crime may be open to interpretation. The final portrait of the murderer may be of someone else. After Hannah has been moved from the hospital to a secure location, Martha works at bringing a confusing image of murder into sharper focus. Maquette for Murder is Spragues second novel featuring Martha Patterson. Martha is an engaging character, and we gladly follow her into the world of art and artists. This inside look makes for an entertaining and informative read. Although this is not an "edge of your seat" story, it is well written and enjoyable. This is a cozy mystery that will leave readers willing to tag along with Martha the next time her noisiness leads her into an adventure. |
