Murder in Belleville by Cara Black SoHo Press 368 pages, October 2000 ISBN 1569472114 Reviewed by Phillip Tomasso III Read our author interview Cara Black brings to life Aimee Leduc, a private investigator in France who desperately wants to get her corporate computer security business up and running but instead finds herself enveloped in murder mystery. Anais, a friend's sister, suspects her husband of extramarital activities. Wanting to move out of marital surveillance and into computer security, Leduc has little interest in the case but agrees to meet with Anais. Right away things seem wrong. When a strange woman's car blows up, Anais explains to Leduc that the dead woman was her husbands mistress. But there's little time for explanations as the perpetrators immediately chase the pair. And the fast-paced beginning seamlessly flows into a fast-paced crime novel. As an eyewitness to the violent crime, Leduc knows she must find out who killed the woman in the car. Her investigation is far from unobserved. She knows it must be people in powerful positions who want her stopped, since every turn leads into another realm of unfortunate trouble. Set in France in 1994, Murder in Belleville incorporates the flux experienced in political French history at that time. Black adds an intriguing cast of characters, swift dialogue and believable narrative. An exiting book written by an engaging, up and coming author. |
