The Cavaradossi Killings by David Dvorkin Wildside Press 175 pages, June 2000 ISBN 158715126X Reviewed by Nancy Mehl Read our author interview "You still judge people, dont you? I remember you as being very judgmental. You judge and you watch, but you dont get involved. Youre watching us from the outside, just like in the past." She turned away angrily and followed the others into the auditorium. After a moment, Tom forced himself into motion and went into the auditorium himself. Spending the rest of his life in Ransom had begun to seem a very bad idea. - From The Cavaradossi Killings Tom Hamilton has come home to Ransom, Colorado. But home is not necessarily where the heart is. Toms boyhood in the small Colorado town was filled with rejection and abuse. Why has he returned? Is it to find something in Ransom or to run away from something in Chicago? Even Tom is not completely certain. Everyone wonders just what hes been doing the last twenty years - but Toms not talking. When a young tenor performing Tosca is tragically killed, Tom is pulled into the investigation. Something is wrong, and Tom sets out to find out what it is. Ghosts from the past swirl around him as he tries to find out whether the real play is onstage or whether he is stuck in the middle of an orchestrated fantasy. The Cavaradossi Killings is fast-paced and exciting. David Dvorkin has created an interesting hero whose past suggests that he may be more sinner than saint. Toms memories of Chicago make us wonder just what he did there, and how tight his ties were to the mob. Tom Hamilton is a puzzle that is not quite solved. The mystery will never be over until we know more about his intriguing past. Although some of the plot twists stretched the limits of credulity, Dvorkins wonderful writing style and gripping story kept me turning the pages. Even when the plot draws to its exciting conclusion, we are still left with questions about Tom Hamilton. And we have to know what happens next. Perhaps in a sequel. |
