Everybody has heard of the Starship Enterprise, but Gene Roddenbury didn’t just pluck the name out of the ether.

The name had already been borne proudly by at least two other ships, one during the War of Independence and the other during WWII. Then there was Picard’s ship, which also bore the same name, and others as well along the way.

This book is an anthology of stories about the various captains who served on these ships. Some need no introduction – Pike, Kirk, Spock and Picard come into this category of course. But what about Israel Daniel Dickenson back in the 18th century, or Osborne B. Hardison during the 1940s? Then there is Robert April,Will Decker, John Harriman and Rachel Garrett all of whom had a brief moment of glory, or otherwise, at the helm of SF’s most famous starship.

What then of the short stories themselves? The ones featuring famous names come out best. The introductions contribute useful reading and to a true-blue, dyed-in-the-wool fan, this is certainly essential reading. This fascinating anthology is certain to emphasize why the Enterprise became such an icon of popular culture.
