I HAVE LOST ALMOST EVERYTHING

I have lost almost everything.
From this window
I have seen the sun rising
one more morning upon middle class ruin.
No one saw us
that surreptitious evening
as we moved through a gallery of mirrors,
your reflections being everything I wanted.

Sometimes I catch a glimpse of you
out of the dark corner of my eye.
You embraced me when I was in full sadness,
brought a hard-won smile to my lips.

Where are you now?
What emotions visit your heart?
How often do you think of me?

I open the book of memory
to the pages that are only yours.
I move beneath the sky, seeing you
reflected in all the silvery pieces of the broken
world.
