The National Library of Canada was a major partner at the second national conference on history and history teaching, held in Winnipeg from Friday, October 19 to Sunday, October 21, 2001. Entitled "Giving the Future a Past: Teaching, Learning and Communicating the History of Canada: Challenges and Solutions," the conference attracted teachers, university professors and representatives from historical and cultural institutions across Canada.

Highlights from the conference included keynote addresses by National Librarian Roch Carrier and National Archivist Ian Wilson. A banquet hosted by Canada’s National History Society (CNHS) featured the presentation of the 2001 CNHS Pierre Berton Award for distinguished achievement in popularizing Canadian history. The recipient of this year’s award, presented by Pierre Berton himself, was CBC for its acclaimed television series Canada: A People’s History. In his gracious acceptance speech, Executive Producer Mark Starowicz made special note of the important role played by the librarians and archivists of the National Library and National Archives in the success of the series.

During the conference, Rïse Segall, Marie-Josée Tolszczuk and Susan Haigh, from the National Library, held interactive workshops demonstrating the online teaching and learning resources available on the Library’s Web site. They also joined their colleagues Nina Milner and Nicolas Savard at the National Library booth, which was a hive of activity throughout the conference. National Library staff welcomed the opportunity to meet teachers from across Canada and to share with them the richness of the National Library’s collections.
