About the Nosocomial Infection Control Guideline Program

Representing over ten years of evidence collection and collated specialists’ advice, and summarizing the latest scientific evidence, the Public Health Agency of Canada publishes a series of Infection Control Guidelines as a supplement to the Canada Communicable Disease Report. Theses guidelines have proven to be an invaluable resource.

Prior to being published all Infection Control Guidelines are reviewed by the Steering Committee. This committee is a national and multi-disciplinary committee, whose mandate is to provide the Public Health Agency of Canada with timely infection control and healthcare infection epidemiologic advice on current and emerging issues concerning:

  • Infection control practices to prevent the acquisition or transmission of infection during the provision of healthcare.
  • Emerging infectious disease risk related to changing or novel healthcare practices and/or equipment.
  • The risk of transmission in a healthcare setting of emerging or re-emerging infectious diseases.
  • Ethical and clinical issues which may impact on the application of recommendations contained in the Infection Control Guideline.

Without limiting the foregoing, the Steering Committee will carry out its mandate by:

  • Advising on review and revisions of existing guidelines in the Infection Control Guidelines Series.
  • Advising on the need to develop new Infection Control Guidelines for the series.
  • Participating as chair and/or members of infection control guideline working groups.
  • Participating on ad hoc working groups during real or perceived emergency or crisis situations.
  • Line-by-line review of Steering Committee Documents as required.
