Statistical snapshots of Canada's seniors

Introduction

This series of statistical snapshots builds on the series that was introduced in 1999, International Year of Older Persons. The Division of Aging and Seniors starts this new series by releasing 10 revised factsheets on the 2001 International Day of Older Persons. One snapshot will be posted on this website every week, leading to the World Assembly on Aging in April 2002.

The objective of this series is to enhance understanding, harmony and mutual support across generations by presenting accurate information about this widely diverse group, the fastest growing group in Canadian society. The series covers population characteristics, seniors' diversity, family and living arrangements, health, work and community, income trends and lifestyles.

The series is produced for Health Canada by Statistics Canada, drawing on the latest data available.
