National Framework on Aging
top of page The Federal/Provincial/Territorial Ministers Responsible for Seniors, with the exception of Quebec, proposed the development of a National Framework on Aging (NFA) in 1994, to assist them in responding to the needs of this population. Designed as a voluntary Framework, it has as its core, a shared Vision Statement and five Principles that seniors and governments across Canada endorse.

top of page Almost two-thirds of injury-related hospitalizations for seniors are the result of falls and it is estimated that injurious falls cost the health care system over $1 billion each year. Falls are the cause of disability, reduced quality of life and social contact, institutionalization, shortened lives, and immense costs to the Canadian health system. Report on Seniors' falls in Canada describes not only the incidence and consequences of seniors' falls, but also a review of known factors for falls among seniors, and evidence of current best practices and programs to prevent seniors' falls. The report provides 64 pages of valuable information for health policy makers and health practitioners working with seniors. Technical reports on the data and analyses carried out are available on the website.
