Funding of Cancer Programs
Approximately 50% of all cancers can either be prevented or detected early before becoming a serious health concern (Cancer Care Ontario, 2006)
The Public Health Agency of Canada funds programs that contribute to the larger strategy of preventing chronic diseases in Canada by increasing knowledge and awareness of cancer risk factors, enhancing early detection and screening for cancer, better managing cancer care, supporting those who have cancer and encouraging the use of public health best practices and intervention models in communities.
The Agency provides funding to support cancer-related projects that begin as ideas in communities and result in promising and best practices that could be used in other parts of the country. The Agency consults with stakeholders in the cancer community to shape each solicitation to meet the most pressing needs.
Funding cancer programs is part of the larger Government of Canada efforts on cancer which include the Canadian Strategy for Cancer Control, the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer, cancer surveillance to track trends in incidence, the Federal Tobacco Control Strategy, and the Canadian Institute for Health Research's Institute of Cancer Research.
