Chapter 78
2001 March

We have built a communication system that lets anyone in the world send information to anyone else in the world, arriving in seconds, at any time, at an extremely low and falling cost.

This was not a mistake. It was not an accident!

The world collectively has spent trillions of dollars and millions of person-years, over hundreds of years, to build this system — because it makes society vastly better off than when communication was slow, expensive, regional, and unreliable.

150 years ago, warriors killed civilians and each other for months after the combatants had signed peace treaties, because the news of peace had not reached them yet. Even a decade ago, a friend of mine died of a rare cancer, because the existing Japanese research paper that showed how to treat it wasn't findable in time by his US doctors. These are just the tiny tip of an iceberg of problems and inefficiencies that rapid cheap worldwide communication has solved...

Decision-Makers Never Use the Service

A Sunday Daily News survey over the last two weeks discovered not one of Halifax Regional Municipality's 24 political leaders uses the public transit bus service regularly. Six haven't taken a public bus in more than a year. Three haven't in ten years, and it's been more than twenty years for two others. And one councillor has never ridden a Metro Transit bus. These 24 regional councillors are the people who make all the important decisions about this public transit service.

New Online Newspaper

ALLnovascotia.com

Frank founder David Bentley and daughter Caroline Wood are launching an online newspaper this week. Relax — it's about business.

The two, who worked side by side at the gossipy biweekly almost since its 1987 start, have given up newsprint for cyberspace. "I think Web publishing is certainly going to be where it's at, with its accessiblity. Regular newspapers just can't compete with that," says Wood, who followed her 58-year-old dad out the door of Frank after he retired last year. The 38-year-old Dalhousie accounting grad had been the business manager for Frank since 1989.

For the past year they have been planning to combine her business acumen with Bentley's news instincts to create a five-day-a-week Nova Scotia business newspaper on the Internet. Their office consists of two computers in Wood's Halifax home.

She is publisher. Bentley's new title? "Dad," says Wood. "I see myself doing the lion's share of the work. He's supposed to be in retirement mode."

The two have hired Elmsdale computer consultant Miles Thompson to set up the Web site: ALLnovascotia.com. They will file three to four stories a day and compile classifieds. The site will also have an up-to-date list of who's suing whom. The online newspaper won't have any paid advertisements, but will survive on subcriptions. Readers will be offered a free trial and then can sign up for $2 a week. The official launch date is Tuesday, March 6th.

Two Nova Scotia Byelections,
All Six Candidates Ignore the Internet

On this day, two byelections were held in Nova Scotia to fill vacant seats in the legislature — one in Cape Breton North and the other in Halifax Fairview. On March 1st, five days before these elections, I did an extensive search of the Internet to find any campaign websites which might exist. No trace of any campaign website was found, not even so much as an e-mail address for any candidate.

Nova Scotia Progressive-Conservative Party

No trace was found of a campaign website for either Cecil Clarke, the PC candidate in Cape Breton North, or for Narayana Swamy in Halifax Fairview. The following websites/pages contained no mention of any campaign website related to either of these byelections; in fact, with the single minor exception noted below, none even mentioned the byelections.
