While Victor Lemoine is credited with
creating Hyacinthiflora lilacs, other hybridizers performed similar crosses.
In 1925, Canadian breeder, Dr. Frank Skinner, turned part of his Manitoba
ranch into a nursery to develop plants suited to the extreme prairie climate.
Self-taught, Skinner’s lilac fame resulted from crosses involving
Syringa oblata ssp. dilatata
and Syringa vulgaris.
His first introductions in 1932 included 'Minnehaha'.
Many of his lilacs are still popular including 'Pocahontas'
and 'Maiden’s Blush'
(his last introduction). He also introduced several Preston hybrids.
