Introduction
"The Grand Lady of Canadian Horticulture"
Isabella Preston was a world-renowned plant breeder who spent most of her
adult life in Canada. Between 1912 and 1946, she developed close to 200 new
hybrids of lilacs, lilies, Siberian irises, roses, and crabapples. She became
known among her colleagues as the "dean of hybridists," and many
plants, including the Preston lilacs, bear her name.
During her career, Miss Preston developed 82 of these hybrids, 47 of which were introduced into the nursery trade.
