Family Life and Immigration to Canada
Isabella Preston was born in Lancaster, England, in 1881, and is the youngest
of five children. As a young girl she showed great interest in gardening. Her
parents, enthusiastic gardeners themselves, fostered this interest.
In 1912, when she was 31, and both her parents had died, Isabella immigrated
to Canada and settled in Guelph. Until that time, her only formal training had
been a short course in horticulture.
