Lesson #3 Carr Family and the Internet

AN INTERNET CONNECTION IS NOT MANDITORY

  • Time: 30 minutes each activity.

  • Logistics: Class discussion and use of computer with Internet or CD ROM drive.

  • Supplies: Recommended Learning Resource (p.39-42), Guide to Find (p.33-34), The Picture Gallery (p.43-57), Internet Glossary (p.35-36), CD ROM, and a computer with Internet access or CD ROM drive.

  • Internet: Emily Carr At Home and At Work web site (http://www.gov.bc.ca/culture
    /schoolnet/carr/index.htm).

  • CD ROM: Emily Carr At Home and At Work.

  • Guide Activity: Carr Family (p.63).

Activities

Number 1

Begin with a review of Emily Carr and her artwork. In an "Emily Carr" theme unit, discuss concept of the family with the class.

Invite the students to find pictures and information of Emily Carr’s family from the web site/CD ROM.

  • Ask the students to search the Internet. Using the Guide to Find have students search the Internet to find the Emily Carr At Home and At Work web site. Students can also complete this project by using the CD ROM package provided with this Teacher’s Guide.
Number 2

Brief the students as a class on how to access the Emily Carr At Home and At Work web site. Photocopy the sheet labelled Guide to Find and distribute to class. Have students review the Internet Glossary.

  • Ask the students to turn on the computer, link to the Internet with a browser* (Netscape, Internet Explorer), and use asearch engine* (e.g. Alta Vista, Lycos, Yahoo, etc.) or type in the address/URL* to find the Emily Carr At Home and At Work web site. To complete this activity with the CD ROM version of the Emily Carr At Home and At Work web site, simply have students load the disk into the CD ROM drive and continue.
Number 3

Find sheet labelled Carr Family. This resource activity provides 8 multiple choice questions to research the facts about Emily Carr’s family. Photocopy and provide each group with a copy of the questions.

  • Ask the students to circle the correct answer after they search the Family section from the Emily Carr At Home and At Work web site.
