Objective is to have students map out their neighbourhood.

Lesson #4 Carr Neighbourhood Walk

  • Time: 30-45 minutes each activity.

  • Logistics: Walk around neighbourhood, classroom activity.

  • Supplies: Neighbourhood Walk (p.38), The Picture Gallery (p.43-57), paper, pens, pencils, paint, crayons, brushes, rulers, erasers.

Activities

Number 1

Begin with a review of Emily Carr and her artwork. Use The Picture Gallery to review with students the following questions:

  • Ask the students, "Who is Emily Carr, and what does her artwork look like?"
Number 2

Emily Carr loved to walk around her neighbourhood. Have the students walk around the neighbourhood and map out the places they visit, a friends house, the store, your school, etc., Using the model of the Neighbourhood Walk have students map out their neighbourhood.

  • Ask the children to discuss where they go in their neighbourhood.
  • Ask the students to approximate and map out the streets, buildings, shops, parks, beaches, etc., in their neighbourhood and add the appropriate labels and colour.
