Objective is to have students examine Victorian architecture.

Lesson #5 Architectural Field Trip

  • Time: 45min+travel time.

  • Logistics: Visit the Emily Carr House or walk around neighbourhood, classroom activity.

  • Supplies: Architecture Vocabulary (p.30), paper, pens, pencils, paint, crayons, brushes, glue, popsicle sticks, tooth-picks.

Activities

Number 1 Emily Carr House is a typical Victorian House. Have students examine buildings of a particular structure (e.g., Victorian). Visit the Carr House or a similar house in your area to research its architecture. Take notes on the exterior finishes, windows, porch, paint colours, fireplace finishes, etc. Have students identify what makes a particular building’s architecture distinctive. Use the Architecture Vocabulary to identify some exclusive features.

Ask the students to:

  • Explain how a Victorian house is similar or different to their house.

  • Identify the material from which the Emily Carr House is made. Is it wood, brick, stone?

  • Explain who built Emily Carr House.

  • Know when the Emily Carr House was built.

  • Know the dates or circa which make a house “Victorian”.

  • Draw or paint a typical Victorian house.

  • Build a model of a typical Victorian house.
