Lesson #4 Introduction to the Internet/CD ROM

AN INTERNET CONNECTION IS NOT MANDITORY

Time: 30 minutes each activity.

Logistics: Class discussion and introduction to technology tools, the Internet and CD ROM by teacher.

Supplies: Recommended Learning Resource (p.39-42), Guide to Find (p.33-34), CD ROM, and a computer with Internet access or CD ROM drive.

Guide Activity: Vocabulary Cards (p.67).

Activities

Number 1

Introduce the use of information technology tools with Vocabulary Cards.

  • Ask students to work in pairs to identify and match picture vocabulary cards with the parts of a computer (e.g., mouse, keyboard, monitor, and printer).

  • Ask students to discuss the proper care and safe use of each of these components with students. For example; no eating or drinking around equipment, don’t pull wires, be gentle and relaxed.
Number 2

This activity will make use of the Emily Carr At Home and At Work web site and CD ROM. Divide the students into pairs or small groups.

  • Ask the students to search for the Emily Carr At Home and At Work web site.

  • Ask the students to use suggested search words and follow procedures in Guide to Find the Emily Carr At Home and At Work web site.

  • Ask students to take turns putting the CD ROM into the drive to access the Emily Carr At Home and At Work web site.
