Historically, the Dining room was a center of family life, complimenting the drawing room. This room is not in its original condition because of the addition of a bay window probably in the mid-1880's. This room was used extensively for the family's daily life, and later served as Emily's first art classroom and her studio. You can return to the Foyer or go to the Hallway.

one was teaching drawing in Victoria: mothers asked me to start a children's class. I did not want to teach. I was afraid of pupils, but I did teach and soon I got fond of the children and liked the work. I taught my class in our dining room. The light was bad; the room got messed up; there was trouble after every class."

--Growing Pains By Emily Carr.

currant jelly was served with the cold mutton, and potato salad and pickled cabbage, afterwards there was deep apple pie with lots of Devonshire cream. In the center of the dinner table, just below the cruet stand, stood an enormous loaf of bread. Mr. Harding the baker cooked one...it was four loaves baked in one...it was made cottage- loaf shape - two storeys high with a dimple in the top...When dinner was finished, Father folded his napkin very straight, he even slipped his long fingers inside each fold again after it was in the ring, for Father always wanted everything straight and right. Then he looked up one side of the table and down the other. We all tried not to squirm because he always picked the squirmiest. When he had decided who should start, he said, 'Tell me what you remember of the sermon.' If Dede was asked first, she 'here and there'd' all over the sermon. If it was Lizzie, she plowed steadily through from text to amen. Alice always remembered the text. Sometimes I remembered one of Dr. Reid's jokes."
