The Killdeer
The Killdeer is of the Plover family. These birds are thick-necked, compactly-built wading birds. The Killdeer is one of the largest of the bunch, and is the only belted Plover that has two bands of dark brown across its breast (the others have only one). They have fairly long legs, and run in short starts and stops. The Killdeer, unlike other Plovers, is more commonly found in farmlands, but it can be found near river banks occasionally. It was (like many other birds) named for its call, which is a repeated "kill-deer, kill-deer". Killdeer can be found near fields, meadows, lawns, river banks, and shorelines.
