Burrowing Owls are distributed sparsely throughout the
Mixedgrass and Dry
Mixedgrass ecoregions of Alberta. Historically, the owls were somewhat common in the fescue grass
ecoregion and in the southern part of the
aspen parkland as far north as Wainwright, but their range has since contracted so that the
species now occurs only sporadically in these two areas. The present range for the Burrowing Owl in Alberta spans from the Saskatchewan border west to Milk River, Lethbridge, and Strathmore. The northern boundary of the range runs just north of Drumheller, Hanna, and Youngstown.
