Loggerhead ShrikeStatus
The Loggerhead Shrike was classified as a
Red List
species in 1991 based on the belief that there were probably fewer than
500 breeding pairs in the province, and that populations were likely
declining. In a more recent review of the status of Alberta
Wildlife the species was placed on the
Yellow List of species that are
not currently at risk, but for which there is concern about long-term
decline in numbers. This change in designation was made because
the provincial population was larger than previously thought. The
species is ranked as S3 by the Alberta Natural Heritage Information
Centre, because of its restricted and local distribution in the
province. Reprinted from Alberta Wildlife Status Report No. 24 (1999), with permission from Alberta Sustainable Resource Development. |
