Direction, Bearing, & Azimuth

Bearings are measured East or West of North, up to 180 degrees.
Bearings are measured East or West of North, up to 180 degrees.

An important part of understanding topographic maps is to understand how direction is shown and measured on a map. Directions are shown as bearings or azimuths. A bearing measures the degrees of an angle, east or west, from north or south from zero to a maximum of 180 degrees. Azimuths are similar to bearings, but degrees are counted clockwise for 360 degrees, beginning and ending at north.

Azimuth is measured clockwise from North (zero degrees) up to 360 degrees.
Azimuth is measured clockwise from North (zero degrees) up to 360 degrees.

The compass in The Topographic Trek measures direction using azimuth.
