| On January 7, 1998, Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Jane Stewart apologized on behalf of the Government of Canada to all Aboriginal people who have suffered directly and indirectly as a result of the residential school system that was imposed upon their people and culture. Assembly of First Nations Grand Chief Phil Fontaine was present to accept this apology. |
