The Apology
On January 7, 1998, Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Jane Stewart apologized on behalf of the Government of Canada to all Aboriginal people who have suffered directly and indirectly as a result of the residential school system that was imposed upon their people and culture.  Assembly of First Nations Grand Chief Phil Fontaine was present to accept this apology. These photographs depict that moment which was long overdue in the eyes of many Aboriginal people who have been affected by this system of assimilation.  Sadly enough, in the eyes of many, the apology will never erase the abuse that was suffered.
