Douglas Cardinal won the contract to build the Institute of
American Indian Arts in 1993. When it is completed, it will occupy
750,000 square feet of Santa Fe, New Mexico. The $13M facility will
be more than an arts school. It is perceived as a unique
demonstration of Native American culture and philosophy. Its
construction is viewed as another step in America's long-term plan
to translate American Indian values into a set of specific planning
principles and processes.
The campus will include art studios and academic spaces for 500
students, administration and support facilities, and student and
artists' housing. It will also be the home of the American Center
for Native Images and the Center for Research and Cultural
Exchange.
