1970
  • Township Council adopts new development plan

1971

1973

  • Reaction mixed to farm land policy
  • Government farmland freeze 'a gigantic form of zoning.'
  • June start for major shopping complex - More than $3,000,000 for first phase.
  • Site preparation work is well underway on joint city-township sewerage treatment plant located off Wolfe Road.
  • Five Corners landmark, the Barber block, to be leveled landmark - New Bank of Montreal will cost just under $1,000,000.
  • Events mark centenary of St. Thomas Church
  • Pierre Elliot Trudeau and Santa coming to town Saturday December 8.
  • Community College plan given a giant boost - 1000 turn-out for the meeting.

1974

  • Cottonwood Centre Mall to open April 24. Will open with 24 of 45 stores open and operating.
  • Final approval is given for community college, Fraser Valley College is born.

1975

  • Sears solid-state 20" color TV with In-line Black Matrix tube $499.97

1976

  • Nine "yes" - five "no" at amalgamation forum - All six members of City council voted in favour of amalgamation, while five out of seven on township councilors voted against.
  • Era ends as Edenbank cattle barn comes down. Time and weather have taken their toll on the old structure. It has become a fire hazard, so it is being dismantled.

1977

  • Chilliwack Eaton's store closed its doors.
  • Skway First Nation blocked off a portion of Wolfe Road for 24 hours to remind township that the road is on reserve land

1978

  • Vedder's four lanes draw protests. Concerns raised by residents include devaluation of real estate, hazardous driving conditions, and destruction of local businesses.
  • College campus purchase approved. The long-awaited purchase of a permanent Chilliwack campus for Fraser Valley College approved by the provincial cabinet.

1979

  • Chilliwack Family YMCA on Hocking Avenue opens
  • After 60 years at its downtown location landmark Brett's Ltd. moves to new premises on Chilliwack River road.
