1980
  • Parkholm Lodge opens - new $2.6 million intermediate care facility officially opens.
  • Half B.C. farm output here in Fraser Valley - Fifty-one per cent, of British Columbia's farm output comes from the lower Fraser Valley.
  • Chilliwack is new forest district centre.

1981

  • District will build new RCMP centre.

1982

  • Economic malaise to last well into 1982 reports the Employers Council of B.C.
  • Official Community Plan set for August 16 hearing.
  • Property owners of the Sardis and Vedder areas receive notice that compulsory garbage collection is coming.

1983

  • $1.5 million fire razes Sardis landmark at Coqualeetza - Between 70 to 80 people were evacuated.

1984

  • Coqualeetza granted to Salish Indian bands
  • Ring road rolls back April 30- Controversial ring road one-way downtown traffic system reverts back to two-way traffic.
  • Sardis merchants say: do not widen Vedder Road - the head of the District traffic committee says making the road four lanes "inevitable".
  • Big screen's crash end of era - Chilliwack Drive-In Theatre's big screen came crashing to the ground at the hands of demolition crews.

1985

  • Rainbow shines on arts centre opening : Gala smashing success.
  • Chilliwack Foundation created - Board of directors hold their first meeting October 17.

1986

  • Major hotel gets nod at Salish Place

1987

  • "Man in Motion" Rick Hansen, a wheelchair athlete, was greeted by an estimated 3,000 people at the Chilliwack Coliseum.
  • Arson charged in Hart Block fire.

1988

  • Hospital wing opens January 30 - Chilliwack new hospital wing will be officially opened at the end of this month.
  • New Save-On complex opens - John Jansen and Clarence Heppell, cut the ribbon to open Save-On Foods.

1989

  • Overpass is open - The long awaited Yale Road overpass opens Friday, with the first official driver crossing the $7-million structure just as a train passed underneath.
