Almost all Native groups in Canada
have some form of word carvers. |
 |
Wood is easily found all across the
country and is comparatively inexpensive. |
 |
Sizes vary depending on the piece of
wood or the tree. |
 |
Items that may be carved include,
masks, bowls, totem poles, and carrying boxes. Also, depictions of nature or Native
symbols may also be carved. |
 |
Carvings can be made using knives,
traditional tools, power tools, and even chainsaws. |
 |
Images may be finished with stains,
lacquer, or acrylic paints. |
 |
Images may be coloured according to
spiritual beliefs or in the natural colour of the images. |
 |
Different mediums may be combined. For
instance, the Cree may mount their carvings on other woods such as driftwood or a diagonal
cut of birch to add to the piece. |
