Bedroom
This is an example of a typical working-class bedroom. The large bed is held together with wooden pegs -- no nails were used. The springs concist of rope wrapped around the frame; a special wooden key was used to tighten these rope springs. The saying " Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite" is believed to have originated with this type of bed because the ropes needed to be kept taut. The mattress would have been stuffed with feathers. The small bed in the corner is a trundle bed; it was used by young children. During the day, this bed was slid underneath the larger bed to create more space. The mattress in the trundle bed was stuffed with straw so that it could be easily changed if the baby had an accident.
