Cumminger House

Bedroom

SpacerThis is an example of a typical working-class bedroom. The large bed is held together with wooden pegs - no nails were used. The springs consist of rope wrapped around the frame. The saying "Sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite" is believed to have come from this type of bed because the ropes would have needed to be kept taunt. A special wooden bed key would be used to tighten the rope springs. The mattress would be stuffed with feathers. The small bed in the corner is called a trundle bed. It would have been used for young children. During the day, it would be slid under the larger bed to create more room. The mattress in the trundle bed would be stuffed with straw so that it would be easier to change if the baby had an accident.
