Heirloom Apple Orchard
Orchard Hot summers are great for getting a tan and growing fruit. The warm weather enjoyed in the Similkameen valley provides ideal conditions for growing apples. After the establishment of the railway in 1906 an assortment of apple trees were planted in the Similkameen valley. The train meant that fruit growers would be able to send their product across the country.

Some of the types of fruits that can be grown in the Similkameen valley include peaches, pears, plums, apricots and apples. Different variations of apples have been preserved at the keremeos site. An example of a Heritage Fruit would be the 'Richter Banana Apple'. With a red and yellow colors the Richter Banana apple is not common. By having a 'Heirloom Apple Orchard' we are able to save many different types of tasty apples for everyone to enjoy.

Can you think of any reason why the establishment of the railway in the area was important?

Can you name some of the fruits that can be grown in the Similkameen valley?
