Root Cellar
Flour With all these apple orchards in the area, we needed to build a storage space for the extra fruit. I can not remember when the root cellar was built, but I think it was during the first part of the twentieth century.

Now with the cellar built we can enjoy apples all year long. The weather in the Similkameen Valley is hot and humid so people who designed the root cellar looked for materials that would keep the inside of the building cool. The builders used concrete when constructing the root cellar. The concrete walls are able to keep the inside temperature at eleven degrees Celsius.

Can you think of what temperature is needed to store apples?
What material was used when building the root cellar to keep the building cool?
What was one of the benefits of building the root cellar?
